The carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt made a port call at Portsmouth, England recently. Too large to enter the harbor, the ship moored offshore in The Solent between Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight. That's one big boat.

These photos present well one of the biggest factors in the scale of something that big - the slight mistiness or haziness (like a mountain range) coming from being very, very far off and still huge. It doesn't always come through in a photo the way it does in person.

My brother is on the TR. It's staying in England for a little bit (can't specify how long for security reasons) but I can tell you it'll be there for at least a few days

Can you find the Americans in the picture? Perhaps your brother? Portsmouth is anticipating 5000 sailors coming ashore for leave. Should be good for the local wallets. But remember what the English thought of the GIs in WWII: Overpaid, oversexed, and over here!

flanel shirt is possibly him. There are thousands on that ship. I've toured it twice. Got to go on a tiger cruise last fall and see some helicopter and flight demonstrations 100mi off the east coast u.s.
